The T.J. Finn Approach

I use an eclectic approach when working with clients because no two people are alike, so no two approaches should be alike in counseling. I use a variety of approaches to counseling, including a neuroscientific approach, cognitive-behavioral, family systems, Rational Emotive Behavorial Therapy, family of origin, solution-oriented and short-term counseling. I employ a variety of techniques to assist you in clarifying your goals for change and taking steps in the desired direction.

If desired, we will discuss the problems you are having from a spiritual perspective. My overall goal in counseling is to assist you in being as healthy as possible physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. I believe that regardless of one’s background or current situation, with dedication and hard work a person can create the life s/he wants to live.  In addition to our conversations and activities within the session, I believe applying learned concepts to daily life is an imperative part of positive change. Please expect both written and experiential homework assignments throughout the course of treatment.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

Marcel Proust

Life isn’t always easy. Sometimes, even the strongest people amongst us need a little bit of help to work through some of life’s more challenging problems. Everyone has battles to fight and hurdles to overcome at some point. Whether you struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, or any other issue, you should know that there is hope for a better tomorrow.

I realize that no two people are the same and as such tailor my therapy to meet the specific needs of my clients. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression or any other issue, I will help you recognize underlying problems, fully realize your strengths and adjust certain behaviors and thoughts to see things a different, healthier way.

Therapy, like life, is a journey. Life is full of many feelings -- fear, hope, joy, sadness, love, rage -- many of which happen simultaneously and many of which can be confusing or scary. I work with people to broaden their awareness of themselves and their feelings, both conscious and unconscious.

Therapy, also like life, needs practical solutions. I work to not only help each client be less judgmental and more aware, but also to bring practical solutions and tools into life. I understand that you are coming to therapy not just to gain insights, but also to make changes in your life.

I advocate for a lifestyle of awareness, of simply noticing what your emotions and thoughts are in any given moment. I also provide a model for ways that clients can be less judgmental with themselves, learning to love and accept who they are.

Therapy is a place where, hopefully, a client can bring all of his or her experiences, from the most painful to the most joyous. Therapy can be a place to work on relationships, personal growth, goals and dreams, anxiety and depression, rage, grief, and even joy. Therapy is also a place to work on issues relating to sexuality, food, addictions, and spirituality.

Individual Counseling

Its all about relationships: Why? Because alone, we age faster. We get depressed, fearful, anxious, and miserable. If we don’t have secure, kind, caring, fulfilling relationships we continue in misery throughout our lives, chasing happiness – buying stuff or piling on lots of activities just to feel a part of something.

If you are coming to individual therapy, we begin with the relationship you have with yourself: the way you see yourself internally, in the world, and in your intimate and professional relationships. This is a really intriguing, cool process because through this differentiation, you get to know, understand, and disable your inner critic; imprints of your parents and previous relationship that impacted on how you think, move, and behave. I look at therapy as training for a marathon. It involves trusting your stamina; pacing yourself; understanding the technique your using; knowing how to breathe, motivate, and rest. I am your personal mental health trainer, not a band-aid.

I don’t believe that people come to therapy because they have (or are) a problem. I believe people come to therapy because they are smart and curious. They want to understand the events in life and their reactions. They want to learn to respond, not react, and feel a sense of control, because they deserve to live a life that feels safe and secure.

You deserve better, fuller, peaceful, fulfilling life and I am here to support you on this journey.

Although I focus on a wide range of problems, I am especially interested in helping people who are motivated to reach better understanding of their inner self and partner with me on working hard to achieve not only optimal mental health but also optimal and secure relationships.
